Surroundings:
Probably the largest selection of attractions on Mauritius can be found nearby. For example, the Black River Gorges National Park, with its rainforest, wild animals, and breathtaking views. Or, the most important Hindi pilgrimage site outside of India, Ganga Talao, with its numerous statues and the Maha Shivaratree festival in Spring. The seven-coloured earth, which is particularly prominent in the late afternoon with different colours shimmering is also worth seeing. The nearby twin waterfalls of Chamarel, which tumble over 90 metres from top to bottom, are another natural phenomenon that are well worth seeing. The history of Bel Ombre is closely linked to the sugar plantation and factory, founded in 1802. At the heart of the plantation, the Chateau de Bel Ombre manor house was built in 1910, which these days serves as a restaurant. The only cultural memorial of the area can be found in the memorial stone for the survivors of the Travessa ship from 1923 at the end of the beach near to the St. Martin cemetery.
